Behind enemy lines. Broken Lines Review

The last attempt before Broken Lines to conquer PC gamers was Tales of the Void-a tactical strategy about a submarine lost in the depths of the sea during the First world war. Conceptually, the developers remained true to themselves: Broken Lines also tells about a group of soldiers who were unlucky enough to be in the middle of nowhere. But in the four years since Tales of the Void, developers have gained skill. Their new project differs from the previous one in a better way — both graphically and gameplay.

The picture in Broken Lines is not the most important element, but here we will use the right to meet on clothes. It looks as nice as it needs to be, even if it doesn’t strike the imagination. Designers are trying hard-some locations have a unique style, which is transmitted by the play of light and effects. For example, the acrid fog that soldiers complain about is a nasty green color, and the war itself often plays with all the shades of red-orange spectra. All in order to tell a simple truth: fighting is bad and scary, understandably? Simply put, Broken Lines has its own visual style. Yes, the small budget of the game and the limited capabilities of the developers are felt — as well as the fact that the soul and effort are invested in the work.

The gameplay of Broken Lines, aka the mind on which we will see off the game and give it a verdict, includes two components-management and combat sorties. After a short prologue, in which the survivors of the crash soldiers gather in a group, they set up their cozy camp. Here it is important to monitor the psychological state of the soldiers (it is expressed in the parameter “self-control”) and supplies, as well as to equip soldiers and train new abilities. The higher the self-control of the fighters, the longer they will hold out in battle under the bullets of opponents and do not panic, starting to rush headlong through the forest.

To strengthen the morale or break the psyche of the soldiers can be using “random events” that occur after completing missions. These are small text adventures, the outcome of which is determined by the player’s choice. For example, you can arrange a diversion in the enemy’s camp or quietly steal supplies under the cover of night. Such events not only affect the self-control of the soldiers, but also allow you to replenish supplies, as well as make friends with the members of the squad. Yes, some of them openly hate each other and get nervous if they go out on a mission with an antagonist.

In the same camp, further actions of the fighters are determined. The player can always choose what to do next — take revenge on the villains and go into open conflict, or try to collect more provisions for their soldiers. You can also determine the duration of the task: for example, go under the cover of night or perform in the afternoon in the hope of collecting as much valuable information as possible. All these decisions affect events not only here and now, but also in the future. Broken Lines have as many as five endings. In other words, there is room for replayability.

But most of the time the gamer will spend on the battlefield. This is a small location of semi-open type — there are starting and ending points, but how to get from point A to point B is up to the player. There are a lot of ways to bypass various sections, and there are always shelters on the way. You can reduce the armed conflict to a minimum or try to clean up the entire territory from local steampunk foes. Squad management is based on the pause-play-pause mechanics. It is well known to those who played, for example, in Frozen Synapse 2. First, the character’s actions are determined: a route is built, abilities are activated, and the need to hide without shooting is indicated, or to engage in a firefight. After the actions for all members of the squad are selected, the pause is disabled and the soldiers run to do what is said. Soldiers shoot themselves, so you just have to pray to all the gods in which you believe that the dummies will pass the “ixcomovirus”, in which they will start smearing with a shotgun, being face to face with the enemy. Some characteristics of soldiers can be improved in the camp using active or passive abilities. For example, get a bonus for shooting from cover or become fearless and learn how to shoot better under enemy pressure.

There is a place for tactical experts to deploy. The AI is pretty smart, which is very important for this type of game. Enemies are lured to their territory, using shelters, suppressing fire and flanking. All these procedures can and should be used yourself-take the “highground” according to the precepts of General Kenobi, send your favorite “bum with a shotgun” to the rear, cover with overwhelming fire and scatter smoke bombs everywhere so that snipers do not pierce the soldiers ‘ helmet along with their heads. The character’s death is permanent, so sending them to battle in an open field is not the most reasonable solution.
