Before I even knew what I wanted to design this time around, I had a colorstory in mind. Usually my inspiration first starts with the object, but in this case I had pulled the prettiest combo of Hue + Me from my shelves and I just couldn’t wait to get something on my hook with it so I opted for something simple and quick to really show off the combo. Where did I get the colorstory? Copenhagen!

I am always saving images with colorstories I love to an Instagram collection, and for some reason the algorithm kept showing me photos of this beautiful city which continued to make their way to my saved posts. I just love the salmon pinky oranges next to the greyish blues and neutral stone colors! I took this inspo to my shelves of Hue + Me and immediately put together the perfect combo with contrasts of temperature, hues, shades, and proportion: Salt, Toast, Grapefruit, and Peacoat.

The balance of light and dark colors with mainly neutrals and a pop of color, the cool toned Peacoat next to the warm toned Grapefruit … it just works so beautifully, does it not!? The fun part about this colorstory is while there are four colors in it, each basket uses only three. This showcases how mini palettes within the four-color combo can also work perfectly. Lastly, contrasts in quantity and proportion are utilized to present the same colors in varying amounts which can create an entirely different visual experience. I go into this concept more in my Extra Credit Color Theory Lesson here.

Aside from the color choices, I am just thoroughly obsessed with the overall vibe of these baskets! I’ve always loved these bread warmer baskets and have several in my kitchen. The crumpled paper, slouchy-but-sturdy look is so sophisticated and relaxed at the same time - the perfect effortlessly chic aesthetic!

Perhaps it’s my love of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand but I really think there’s nothing better than something that is pleasing to the eye but also and most importantly, functional. These baskets sit beautifully in so many rooms of the house to hold various objects and because they come in two sizes you’ll have endless needs for them. House a pot in the kitchen, hold wallets and keys in the entry, toss in hair accessories and makeup in the bathroom, gather toys in the playroom, etc etc etc. They also make excellent gifts of course!

STITCH EXPLANATION

Twisted single crochet (tw sc) – insert hook into the next st, draw up a loop, rotate hook 360 degrees counterclockwise, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Notes: Baskets are worked from the bottom up first in un-joined spiral rounds for the base, then in turned, joined rounds for the body. Use a removable stitch marker to keep track of beginning of each base round. Increases are staggered to prevent a hexagon shape from forming. To change color, work the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. Alternate colors can be carried up the interior of the work in striped sections to avoid cutting and weaving in ends.
