Companion CD or mp3 downloads

The Companion CD and mp3 downloads include the pieces from this book and also from Sylvia's Chanukah Music for All Harps book. These recordings assist harp players in learning the pieces in these books. Since many of you will want to "play along" as you are learning, Sylvia has recorded most of the pieces slower than they are usually played, and as "straight" as possible, with little or no expression or rhythmic variations.
In the books each piece has two arrangements: (A) an easy version, and (B) one that is more difficult. On these recordings, Sylvia plays the "B" versions. Since the two versions can be played as a duet, you can play either version along with the recording. The pieces are in the same order as in the books, with the Christmas pieces first, and then the Chanukah ones.

Music from A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi arranged by Sylvia Woods

For lever or pedal harp.

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" was the first prime-time animated TV special based upon Charles Schulz's beloved Peanuts characters. Since its CBS debut in 1965, it has aired in the USA every Christmas season. Sylvia Woods has made harp arrangements of two of the most beloved pieces: Christmas Time Is Here and Linus and Lucy, both included in the same sheet music. They are playable on either lever or pedal harp.

Christmas Time Is Here:
Sylvia has made two arrangements of this favorite Christmas song. One is for pedal harps and lever harps tuned to C or 1 to 2 sharps. The second is for lever harps tuned to 3-flats. As both of these arrangements require a lot of sharping lever changes within the music, they are for intermediate to advanced players. Fingerings, lyrics, chord symbols, and lever and pedal changes are included.

Linus and Lucy:
Linus and Lucy was originally released on the Vince Guaraldi Trio's album "Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown" in 1964. It was used in the TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and has been featured in many subsequent specials. This happy dance tune is the most-recognized theme song of the Peanuts characters.
There are 2 arrangements of Linus and Lucy included. Once you set select C and F sharping levers at the beginning, there are no lever changes needed in either version. The intermediate arrangement includes 2-note chords in the right hand. The easier arrangement has the main melody as single notes. The left hand is basically the same in both arrangements, except that the easier version is written an octave higher so it can be played on smaller harps. Fingerings, chord symbols, and lever and pedal changes are included.

This sheet music includes two 2-page arrangements of Christmas Time Is Here and two 2-page arrangements of Linus and Lucy.

Fingerings, chord symbols, and lyrics are included in the music.

This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you?
Mary, did you know?

For lever or pedal harp.

That Night in Bethlehem is the gorgeous traditional Irish Christmas carol Don Oíche úd i mBeithil. Sylvia has created a 4-verse arrangement playable on lever or pedal harp. Ave Maria PDF Download by Douglas Beck

For lever harp.

Here's how Douglas describes his arrangement:
I arranged Schubert's famous Ave Maria melody for Lever Harp for my congregation. A member of my congregation requested it at Christmas time. I did not find a suitable arrangement to play, so I took matters into my own hands. This arrangement is the result.

Franz Schubert's well-loved music to the Ave Maria lyrics is known worldwide. Ave Maria is a prayer in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke when the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary. The words of this prayer are the angel's: "Rejoice, favored one! The Lord is with you! Do not be afraid. Blessed are you. God is with you!" Ave Maria is suited for weddings, funerals, worship services, or at home with friends and family gathered to pray Mary's prayer.

This arrangement may be played on harps with as few as 34 strings. The music is in the key of G (F# is in the key signature) with lever changes in treble G, A, and C. There are several lever changes where the right hand plays the bass clef notes to free the left hand to make the change. Lever changes in the music are indicated with diamond notes, and any hand change is stated clearly with "r.h." or "l.h."

This six-page PDF includes four pages of music. There are no fingerings.

Ave Maria by Schubert arranged by Rhett Barnwell PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

Franz Schubert's Ave Maria is not easy to play on the lever harp. So I was pleased to see Rhett Barnwell's complete title of this PDF is The Accessible Ave Maria. Here he presents two arrangements: a simplified version and a more advanced version. Both arrangements require extensive lever changes, but the easier version's simplified left hand usually gives you more time to make these changes. The easier version has some fingerings. Both arrangements are in the key of C and require F, C, D, A and G lever changes. Both 3-page arrangements are included in this PDF for a total of 6 pages of music.

Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher has included a lever harp solo, a pedal harp solo, vocal solos with lever harp accompaniment in 3 keys, and vocal solos with pedal harp accompaniment in 6 keys. Bernard's Christmas: Variations on Works by Bernard Andres arranged by Megan Metheney PDF Downloads

For lever or pedal harp.

These 17 arrangements are from Megan Metheney's album "Bernard's Christmas: Variations on Works by Bernard Andres." Each piece infuses a work by Mr. Andres with a Christmas carol. Some of these arrangements contain a small phrase of an Andres composition juxtaposed with a carol; some are set as medleys, while others combine the two parts so that they are played simultaneously. This music highlights the complex yet simple style of Bernard Andres' music and his contribution to the contemporary harp repertoire, both for the beginning and advanced harpist.

The pieces are playable on lever and pedal harps, and lever changes and pedal markings are included. The keys range from 4 flats to 2 sharps, with only a few fingerings. Chord symbols are included. Most pieces are at an intermediate level, but some can be played by advanced beginners.

The YouTube video below shows Megan performing the first piece: Ribambelle #5 / Carol of the Bells.

You can purchase a PDF of all 17 pieces for $25, or PDFs of the individual pieces for $4 each. The PDF of all of the pieces is 50-pages with 47 pages of music.

For lever or pedal harp.

Adolph Adam's Cantique de Noel or O Holy Night is one of the most dramatic and beloved Christmas songs. Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher has included 7 arrangements in this PDF. The two harp solos, for either lever or pedal harp, are in the keys of G (1 sharp) and E-flat (3 flats). The 5 arrangements for solo voice with harp accompaniment are in a variety of keys that should reasonably accommodate the vocal ranges of most solo singers. Please see the keys listed in the contents below. Lever changes are indicated, as well as pedal changes, making this publication practical for all harpists. There are no fingerings. This music has been given a rating of "early advanced" because of the nature of the piece itself - not the difficulty of the arrangements. The left hand has a fair number of 10ths; therefore, the ability to reach that interval with ease is imperative. The steady eighth note motif of the right hand requires a very fluid sense of rhythm. This, plus the skill required to follow a soloist, makes Cantique de Noel a challenging piece of repertoire but worth the effort. A delightful and interesting aspect of this publication is the arranger's English translation from the original French, which is far more beautiful and touching than the words we are so accustomed to hearing. This PDF includes 24 pages of music.

Ten Carols for Two Volume 1 for harp and flute or violin by Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher PDF Download

For lever harp tuned to flats or pedal harp.

This is the first volume in Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher's series of Christmas carols arranged for harp and flute or violin, with guitar chords added. These intermediate harp parts are for lever harps tuned to E-flat, B-flat or F, or any pedal harp.

The Christmas carols used in this PDF have been arranged for melody instrument with harp accompaniment (lever or pedal). There is quite a bit of interplay between the two instruments as well as some solo sections for each of them, making this more than just a melody plus accompaniment book. Guitar chords are included so that if the transcribed accompaniment sections do not suit the harp player, a chordal accompaniment may be used instead. The arrangements are presented in an order that facilitates lever changes between pieces so that the entire collection can be played as a "suite" of carols. However, individual selections may be extracted as desired.

Dynamic markings, fingerings, breath marks, lever and pedal changes are provided throughout. However, the musicians should use whatever expressive markings and lever/pedal adjustments suit them.

The Silent Night and Coventry Carol arrangements were adapted from the solo harp collection of Christmas Classics Volume One. If you own that collection, you will recognize these two arrangements, albeit in a slightly different guise.

If the 8va suggestions are ignored and a few right-hand note octaves are adjusted, this entire book of arrangements can be played on a harp of only 26 strings (3.5 octaves), from low C to high G.

For ease of performance, a separate instrumental part has been provided with this book. However, if both performers prefer to read from the full score simultaneously, permission is granted to make one photocopy of the entire score for use by the instrumentalist.

All tunes were typeset to eliminate any page turns within a piece. Where 1st and 2nd endings are indicated on the harp score, they are only listed above the melody instrument line due to space confines; however, the endings apply to all instruments. All of the tunes used in this collection are at least 100 years old and in the public domain.

ThePersonent Hodie, Ukrainian Bell Carol and Christ Child's Lullaby arrangements were adapted from the solo harp collections of Christmas Classics Volume One and Volume 2. If you own these collections, you will recognize these arrangements, albeit in a slightly different guise.

Three Christmas Carols for low voice and harp by Carol Wood PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

Carol Wood has composed three beautiful modal compositions for low voice and lever or pedal harp. The lyrics are from the Christmas poetry of Thomas Hardy, Kenneth Grahame and G. K. Chesterton. There are no lever or pedal changes needed within the music. Chord symbols are included, and only a very few fingerings. The vocal and harp parts are printed on the same page in a score format. The harp parts are for advanced beginner to intermediate harp players. The harp does not play the melody, so these pieces can NOT be played as harp solos.

The Oxen is one of Thomas Hardy's best-loved poems. Carol's composition is in the D dorian mode in the key of C tuning (no sharps or flats). The vocal range is from the F below middle C up to the G above middle C. The lowest harp note is the D almost 2 octaves below middle C. 6 pages. Carol has also included optional parts for other instruments for this piece: Solo Bass Clef Instrument, Solo Treble Instrument, C Instrument, and C Whistle. You can hear The Oxen by clicking this link, which will open a new window in a different website.

Carol is from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. Carol's music is in the A dorian mode in the key of G tuning (F#s). The vocal range is from the B below middle C up to the B above middle C. The lowest harp note is G, an octave-and-a-half below middle C. 5 pages.

A Christmas Carol is a moving poem by G. K. Chesterton. The music is in the mixolydian mode in the key of C tuning (no sharps or flats). The vocal range is from the G below middle C up to the A above middle C. The lowest harp note is the D almost 2 octaves below middle C. 5 pages.

Creator of the Stars by Douglas Beck PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

Douglas Beck's beautiful improvisational-style arrangements of five hymns are perfect for worship, meditation, and other quiet moments. The pieces range from advanced beginner to intermediate levels, and are in the keys of C, or 1 or 2 sharps. No lever changes are required within the music. Fingerings are not included. This 23-page PDF includes 15 pages of music.

Here is how Douglas describes this collection in his introduction.
Life's "thin place" moments inspired me to arrange this music for lever harp. "Thin places" describe those moments when we feel like we've gotten a glimpse into our lives that takes us deeper from what we see around us. In those moments we sense that there is more to life than what meets the eye.

The harp is a wonderful instrument to experience this music. The instrument's intimate nature lends itself well to quiet meditation. So do the tunes that inspiredthese arrangements. These tunes were inspired by ancient texts that led those who originally sang this music to a deeper sense of unity with life.

"Conditur alme siderum" is a late-night hymn that begins with these words. "Creator of the stars of night, your people's everlasting light, Jesu, Redeemer, save us all,And, hear Thy servants when they call." The tune is plainsong. Plainsong music is known for its rhythm and pitches that are shaped by the rhythm of the text itself. There is another tradition around this hymn connecting it to the Christmas season. I arranged this piece keeping in mind the sky moving from dusk to dark. There's a moment when the stars begin to sparkle.

"Picardy" is a seventeenth-century French hymn. Unlike the freer expression of plainsong, "Picardy" is set to a text that has a regular rhythm. "Let all mortal flesh keep silence" is inspired by the book of "Revelations" in the Bible. This hymn speaks of a time to come when all will live in unity and peace for eternity.

"Tu lucis ante terminum" is another plainsong piece. Traditionally it is sung before bedtime, as a prayer of completion drawing the day to a close. Phrases like "save us from troubled restless sleep" and "calm our minds that fears may cease" are part of a prayer intent on allowing for a more restful night.

"Veni, veni Emmanuel" is a traditional hymn for the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The tune has plainsong roots. The hymn was originally sung, one verse for each of the eight days leading to Christmas Eve. Each day's verse begins with "O come, o come, Emmanuel." For this reason, these verses are sometimes referred to as the "O Antiphons." The same refrain is sungeach of the days. "Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel."

"Verbum supernum prodiens" John Mason Neale's (1818-1866) words are what I have in mind here. He set his words to this ancient tune: "Now that the daylight fillsthe sky, we lift our hearts to God on high..." This hymn for the morning reminds me of the most magnificent sunrise I ever saw. The first light of morning on the Eastern Seaboard of the United Statesis not far from where I live in Maine. From the top of Cadillac Mountain, visitors there at sunrise are the first in the country to welcome the sun at the start of the day. It is a spectacular sight as the light increases, little by little across the Atlantic Ocean. This scene is what I had in mind when writing this arrangement.

The music in this collection is intentionally ordered to give the experience of nature's movement from night to day, from darkness to light. As you learn the pieces, consider playing the pieces in this order. May this music touch you and all with whom you share, that you may experience gifts of peace, hope and contentment.

Gloucestershire Wassail for Harp and Choir by Margot Krimmel PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

Harpist Margot Krimmel and singer Beth Leachman-Gadbaw have arranged this traditional English carol from their Icy December CD for harp, solo voice, and choir.

Since Gloucestershire Wassail has many verses, this arrangement allows for various choir members to sing select verses as solos, with the whole choir singing through two choruses. The piece begins in the key of D (2 sharps), modulates to G (1 sharp) for one verse, the key of C for 2 verses, then F (1 flat), ending in the key of D. All of the lever changes happen between the verses. Most modulations require 2 lever changes, with the modulation from F to D requiring 4. But Margot's arrangement gives you time for your left hand to make these changes. If your lever harp is tuned to the key of C, you will need to tune the B right below middle C down to a B-flat before you begin the piece, for the verse in the key of F. For intermediate harp players. No fingerings.

This music is sold as a PDF download only. The $25 license fee gives the downloader full permission to print as many copies as needed for ONE CHOIR. Please purchase additional licenses if the music will be used by more than one choir.

The PDF includes a 9-page score for choir, and a 4-page part for harp or piano.

Huron Carol arranged for harp and voice or melody instrument by Mary Muckle PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

The Huron Carol (Jesous Ahatonhia) is the first Canadian Christmas carol and possibly the first of the New World. The words in the Huron language are believed to have been written by Father Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary who lived among the Hurons from 1626 to 1649.

Mary Muckle has arranged this beautiful carol for voice and harp. The vocal line is also suitable for melody instrument, such as flute or recorder. This arrangement also works for two harps, with the easier Harp 1 part playing the melody and Harp 2 on the more complex accompaniment.

Mary has set one verse in the original Huron language, two verses in French and three verses in English. In Verse 1 she has used some "x" notations indicating that the harpist should tap on the harp soundboard or sound box with the right hand to suggest a drum. An alternate option is for the second musician to play a hand drum.

This carol is in the key of G minor (2 flats) with no lever or pedal changes required. There are no fingerings. The range of the vocal part is one octave, from the D to D.

This 9-page PDF for advanced beginner to intermediate harp players includes 5 pages of music.

Hymns for Advent PDF Download by Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher

For lever or pedal harp.

Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher has arranged this collection of 24 Advent hymn melodies for intermediate players. Here's how she describes this collection in her introduction.

These tunes may be played on lever harps with an Eb, Bb, F, or C tuning or on any pedal harp. They only use the keys of C, G, and D major - or their relative minor keys - which makes levermovements between pieces quite easy. All tunes were typeset to fit exactly on two facing pages toeliminate any page turns within a piece. If desired, each piece can be lengthened by repeating somesections; section divisions are indicated by light double bar lines. Lever changes required withinsome of the pieces, where indicated, are minimal. Pedal changes are shown below the bass staff.
Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied bychords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings areprovided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates!
All of the hymns in this collection may be played on a harp of only 26 strings, range of low C tohigh G. Treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp, and adjust theoctaves accordingly. Ignore any optional 8va indications and shorten any glissandos.

In the Christian Church, Advent is the time of preparation leading up to Christmas. Traditionally, there are four Sundays in Advent featuring specific scripture readings on a three-year cycle known as the "lectionary." Certain Advent hymn texts are associated with these readings and are often sung on the corresponding Sunday; however, this can vary depending on the year of the lectionary and the preferences of the clergy. Also, many of the hymns are suitable for more than one Sunday. The four Sundays of Advent have a theme associated with each of them, as follows: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. Candles are customarily lit on each Sunday of Advent, and each candle has a particular significance: The Prophecy Candle, The Bethlehem Candle, The Shepherd's Candle, and The Angel's Candle.

All of the pieces are in the key of C or 1 or 2 sharps. Chord symbols and some fingerings are included. Lever and pedal changes are marked in the music. This 56-page PDF includes 48 pages of music.

After Kim performed it in concerts in 2021, it became one of her most requested holiday arrangements. You can choose the "Beginner to Intermediate" version or the "Intermediate to Advanced" version. Either arrangement can be played as a solo, or the two versions could be played together as a harp duet. Both arrangements are in the key of D (two sharps) with no lever changes required. Chord symbols are included, but no fingerings. Each 4-page PDF contains 3 pages of music.

A Kiwi Christmas: Music from Downunder PDF Download by Anna Dunwoodie

For lever or pedal harp.

Here's how Anna Dunwoodie describes this collection of original music.

I composed these twelve new pieces for intermediate lever harp based around the theme of a summertime Christmas in New Zealand. With a bit of variety from the usual themes of snow, reindeer, and a babe in a manger, this book contains a bit of blues, a tango, a strathspey, a couple of waltzes, a cheeky jazzy ragtime piece, and a 6/8 lullaby.

It features pre-set levers (no lever changes within the pieces) and special harp effects such as P.D.L.T., harmonics, dampening, ettoufles, upward and downward ripples, and a wide range of keys.

This PDF includes lots of gorgeous New Zealand-themed graphics by artist (and harpist) Moira Pagan.

Keys range from 3 flats through 2 sharps, with additional levers set at the beginning of some of the pieces. Chord symbols are included, but no fingerings. This 28-page PDF includes 24 pages of music.

Although this collection was written for lever harp, it can also be played on pedal harp. However, pedal markings are not included.

The holiday season and Christmas 'down under' in New Zealand may seem a little different from the traditional white Christmas. You won't see a snowflake or any reindeer here, but Santa and his elves love to start the sleigh ride at the first place on earth where the sun shines each morning.

Mary's Little Boy Child PDF Download by Judith Aucoin Olson

For lever or pedal harp.

Judith Aucoin Olson has arranged the classic 1956 Christmas song "Mary's Little Boy Child" by Jester Hairston for upper intermediate to advanced harp players. The music is in the key of B-flat (2 flats) and includes two A-flat lever or pedal changes. The arrangement includes harmonics, rolled chords, syncopations, and accented notes. Most fingerings are included. This nine-page PDF includes five pages of music, one page of Performance Notes, and one page of lyrics.
You can listen to a synthesized recording of this arrangement by clicking on the Audio Tracks button above.

Here's how Judith describes her inspiration for this arrangement .
Harry Belafonte was known for his contributions to the world of music and his work on behalf of numerous human rights issues. I first came to know him through his music as the "King of Calypso". His album entitled Christmas (released in 1958) which contained one of the versions of "Mary's Little Boy Child" that he recorded, played repeatedly in our home each Christmas season when I was a child. I never grew tired of hearing this song in particular. When it played, I would stop whatever I was doing to listen, entranced by Mr. Belafonte's performance. Even now, I look forward to hearing it on radio and satellite stations every Christmas. It still holds the same magic for me.

"Mary's Little Boy Child" has been recorded by numerous performers in different musical genres. Mr. Belafonte's interpretation is the most memorable for me with its relatively simple and sparse accompaniment and focus on the melody and vocal performance. His stature as a recording artist when he recorded this song played a significant role in popularizing it and establishing it as a Christmas classic.

In later years, I learned of Mr. Belafonte's involvement in various human rights causes, and issues of social justice and climate change. The world has lost a passionate voice and advocate with his recent passing in April of 2023.

This arrangement is offered as an hommage to Mr. Belafonte. Its creation was inspired by his life, his interpretation of this classic, the calypso rhythms for which he was famous, the joy of the Christmas season and the expressive voice of the harp.

I arranged these melodies during two quarantine periods. The first was in Shetland as I added logs and peat to keep the fire going to heat the room. On a clear night, far from urban centers, the skies in Shetland offer a glorious display of stars. The heavens almost burst with sparkling light. My second quarantine period occurred when I returned to Israel. There, the autumn holidays are filled with song. Surrounded by stars and then joyful music, I was in the perfect setting to arrange carols. May you also feel the power and inspiration of wondrous starlight.

Two Harps Plus - Christmas: Silent Night and What Child is This by Joyce Rice PDF Download

For lever or pedal harp.

Joyce Rice has created arrangements of two popular Christmas carols that can be played by harp ensembles with 2 to 4 harp parts. Some fingerings are included. The PDF includes the 4 individual parts and a score for each piece. For lower intermediate players. 16 pages.

Silent Night is in the key of C with no lever changes.

What Child is This (Greensleeves) is in the key of E minor (1 sharp). There are a few lever changes in part 1.

Here are some of Joyce's performance tips:
* I've attempted to make these ensembles accessible to many harp sizes, and to playing levels from rank beginner to intermediate, so that all your harping friends can play with you.
* If a duo is all you can muster, Parts One and Two make complete pieces. Parts Three and Four add harmonic, rhythmic, and/ or tonal richness. There are also beginner parts with each piece.
* When there are enough players, it helps to double the melody.
* AII parts are written for two hands, but less advanced players may wish to play one hand as marked in many parts.
* Because small harps come with a variety of string ranges and levers, you may want to check the "range and lever guide" at the top of each part when choosing which part to play.

Angels We Have Heard on High is in the key of F (1 flat). There are 2 lever or pedal changes in the Harp 2 part.

Here are some of Joyce's suggestions for this music:
* If a duo is all you can muster, Parts One and Two make complete pieces. With more players, Parts Three and Four add harmonic, rhythmic, and/or tonal richness.
* Less advanced players may wish to play one hand at a time.
* There are rehearsal numbers at the start of each line to make it easier for everyone to find the same place.

For lever or pedal harp.

Here's how Douglas Beck describes his PDF.
Welcome The Christ Child is a "Christmas Treasury" of 15 pieces for harps with as few as 34 strings. All of the arrangements speak to the incarnational miracle of the Christ known as "Emmanuel." Every Christmas is a celebration of "God with us." The inspiration for this treasury came from a little rural church in Piscataquis County, Maine. It is there where others heard these arrangements for the very first time over the course of three successive years in a program for the entire community. This work is dedicated to that community, especially the people of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

In this collection, there is music for every skill level, from beginner to advanced. There are no lever changes in the music. Key signatures range from no sharps and flats to one or two sharps (F#, C#). This 32-page PDF includes 29 pages of music. You can watch Douglas' videos below.

Angi's unique PDF music layout gives you 2 versions of the same piece: a 2-page "Key of C" version, and a 2-page "Key of E-flat" version (in 3 flats). Since you get BOTH the C and E-flat versions, you'll have a perfect arrangement, no matter which way you tune your lever harp!
