The RPG genre is experiencing a new Golden age

I wonder where those daredevils who proudly declared the death of role-playing games as a pure genre are now? They said that modern gamers do not have time to understand the complex system of pumping and read large texts, no matter how amazing they were written. Like, the old men who knew how much, were transferred, and the industry did not bring up new heroes. I don’t know what these people are feeling right now, but traditional large-scale RPGs with a focus on narrative definitely feel great.

One of the pioneers of this Golden age were industry veterans from Obsidian, who proved that isometric RPGs of the old school are the most alive in the dilogy of Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. No less a contribution to the current situation of the genre was made by the Belgians from the Studio Larian, who managed to bring the once-considered middle-class Divinity series to a completely new level. And in the AAA-League, the ball is now ruled by CD Projekt RED with “the Witcher 3”. In recent years, so many cool RPGs have been released that everyone can find something different — it’s much harder to find time to play all these games.

Didn’t the new Torment come in? Get and sign up for the amazing Disco Elysium, which largely picks up on the ideas of the original Planescape. Do you prefer tactical combat? Don’t pass it by Wasteland 2 and the new part of Shadowrun. Do you dream of a dark fantasy world in which you will have to fight your way not with a sword, but with your tongue? The Age of Decadence is for you. Does the word Wizardry give you goosebumps? Psst! There one madman after 20 years of development alone released a very similar Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar.

And what is most surprising, even after all the numerous successes of recent years, there is absolutely no feeling of fatigue of the genre. Only in 2020, we are waiting for Cyberpunk 2077, Wasteland 3 and Vampire: the Masquerade-Bloodlines 2. And somewhere in the future, Baldur’s Gate 3 will also be released from the same Larian. Just don’t forget to assemble a team before you travel further.

Goodbye, “tenth”! How the gaming industry has changed over the past 10 years
Microsoft lost the console war
Alas, the days when Microsoft and Sony competed on equal terms are gone. A photo finish might be required to determine the winner of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 race. The outgoing generation of consoles leaves no room for second opinions: the PS4 has overtaken the Xbox One in sales by more than twice.

And Microsoft essentially shot itself in the foot. Failures plagued the Xbox One from the start. Idiotic decisions like requiring a permanent Internet connection or banning the use of second-hand games simply defy explanation. And many owners of the prefix with a cross on the body still remember the word Kinect with a shudder. Don Mattrick did more harm than the red rings of death, and was justly dismissed. But the cost of his mistakes was too great. The situation was not saved even by the purchase of numerous game studios. The Xbox One survived, but at what cost? In order to keep the audience, Microsoft had to make a difficult but logical decision-to release most of its games on PC as well. The list of exclusives of ” box ” today is estimated by ten names, among which only Forza Motorsport 5 and Halo: Guardians are worthy of mention. And in the future, this is unlikely to change: a potential trump card for the Xbox Series X in the form of Hellblade 2 has already been announced for the PC.

Microsoft’s set-top box was in a different weight category. Now it’s just a device for those who prefer to play on the TV and not mess with the computer configuration. Who has benefited from this? First of all, PC gamers. But certainly not the participants of the race. With Xbox, everything is clear. PlayStation, in fact, has lost its only serious competitor. And healthy competition is still the engine of progress.

Nintendo is back on the horse-no matter what
Over the past decade, the “Big N” has had a lot of trouble. Wii U became the most failed console in the history of the company. 3DS, although it got a decent library of games by the end of its life cycle, still turned out to be a pale shadow of its predecessor with an unnecessary gimmick. Satoru Iwata, a brilliant programmer, Manager, and gamer to whom Nintendo owes all the success of the noughties, has passed away. The incredibly charismatic and courageous head of Nintendo of America, Regis FIS-Aime, left the company. All the more surprising is the fact that the Japanese company ends the decade with a successful console on hand and a confident view of the future.

When creating the Switch — a miracle — Nintendo did almost everything correctly. The company clearly realized that they could not support two consoles at the same time, and made one, and a hybrid one. This ingenious solution allowed us to maintain portability and not make significant compromises in terms of hardware. All this, together with competent promotion, allowed us to solve the main problem of the Wii U on Switch: the lack of support for third-party developers. From DOOM and “the Witcher 3” to countless indie games that are begging to be played on some trip-Switch is ready to offer entertainment to a wide audience for every taste. At the same time, the traditional Nintendo fan base still gets its system sellers: the latest parts of Mario, Zelda, and Super Smash Bros. many call the best in the series for good reason. And Nintendo is still capable of crazy experiments like Labo cardboard accessories or the recently announced controller in the form of a Hoop.

Switch has absorbed all the best that you can expect from the Nintendo console, and even more. It took her less than three years to overtake the Xbox One in sales. And it looks like this is just the beginning. Of the announced exclusives, only Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Shin Megami Tensei 5 are worth a lot. And there, you see, and the sequel Breath of the Wild is not far off…

PC – battleground for exclusives
Until recently, the war for exclusives remained exclusively the domain of consoles, and the Peka boyars watched this action with a poorly concealed sense of superiority. The launch of the Epic Games Store had the effect of a bombshell that could change the balance of power in the digital distribution of PC games forever. The determination of the “epics” can not be denied. In order to grab a piece of the market from Steam, they are ready for anything: scandalously steal games from under the nose of a competitor a few days before release, buy back former console exclusives, give up part of the revenue, distribute games for free every week-the benefit of an endless stream of money from Fortnite allows.

It is difficult to give any long-term forecasts for the confrontation between Steam and EGS, but Tim Sweeney and the company behave as if they came in earnest and for a long time. In addition, they do not particularly hide the direct confrontation, openly stating that they are not interested in indie games that have already been released on Steam (although they do not care about releases in other stores), and do not miss the opportunity to once again remind that the Gaben store pays developers less. Valve verbally tries to ignore an aggressive competitor, but it seems to be waking up from hibernation and trying to do something: the recent redesign of the library is proof of this.

The Epic Games Store has enough supporters and opponents, and each side has its own arguments. Of the clear advantages of the coming of EGS, it is impossible not to note the PC releases of Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, as well as a number of less well-known, but no less interesting games like Journey. One of the disadvantages is the need to face a terrible service and disregard for the players just because the game you are interested in bought Sweeney. The next decade will show how this whole story will be resolved and how it will affect the market. But to follow this unexpectedly opened second front of the war for exclusives will be at least interesting.

Author’s game design drives the industry forward
In fact, players still have to deal with the consequences of the indie boom that came at the turn of the previous decades. If that was the real birth of indie games, then the last years have seen their formation. What were the pros and cons.

On the one hand, the indie sector of the industry has grown enormously, sending mountains of second-rate slag to virtual counters. Every month, dozens, if not hundreds of absolutely monstrous and useless games appear on Steam, collected on the knee from ready-made assets. To those who want to earn extra money on fans of cheap cards and achievements, mom’s jokers are also added with all sorts of simulators of the convict for 228 rubles. The trouble is that against the background of this sea of waste, something really original and noteworthy can easily get lost. Valve tries to change the situation, sometimes removing hundreds of games from the store at a time. But in place of a hundred comes a thousand. This doesn’t change the overall picture of Steam as a video game dump. And it is not one. In a world where literally everyone can make and release a game, even on Nintendo Switch can come out horror like Vroom in the Night Sky, immediately got into the top 10 worst games of all time according to Metacritic.
